Hi,
Because of everything that’s been happening to us medically the past few years, both Minay and I set aside our vision checkups (maybe for the last two years for her, and the last three for me), but Minay has been struggling to see clearly for over a year. Her cataracts have worsened over time, which makes it much harder for her to drive at night.
In fact, I spent a night in the hospital after my ablation because no one had released me by late in the afternoon. At some point they told us that I wouldn’t be released that day because they couldn’t reach the doctor to sign off on it, so Minay basically had two choices. Since she can’t drive at night she could either spend the night there in my hospital room and sleep in a chair, or she could drive all the way home (around 30 miles), and come back for me in the morning. She chose to drive home and get a good night’s sleep (smart woman). About 40 minutes after she left, the doctor came in and signed the release papers. I called Minay to let her know, but she was over halfway home and it was starting to get dark. Even if she had made it back to the hospital (which would have been very difficult for her, maybe even dangerous), it definitely wouldn’t have been safe for her to try drive me home after that. So the hospital said they would keep me there. She got a good night’s sleep, we didn’t end up in a nighttime wreck on the way home, the hospital got to add an extra night to the bill (covered by my insurance), and I got to be awakened every two hours all night long (for them to take blood samples and check my vitals). A win-win-win, right? 😊
Minay had her eye exam a week ago, and our doctor said that her cataracts were advanced enough that she definitely needs to have an operation to remove them She has an appointment with an ophthalmologist in January 2026 (the earliest appointment she could get). I have mine next week. I also have cataracts, but they aren’t nearly as bad as Minay’s. Our doctor will likely only give me a new glasses prescription, but (even if the change in the prescription is minimal, and even though I see really well with my current ones) I need to replace them because they are several years old and I’m hard on physical items.
We’ll both get our physical exams in January, but beyond that (and Minay’s eyes), hopefully we’re done with medical stuff for a while.
The next post is about the end of the year. Will I be sad or glad to see it go?
See you then,
Michael
