This isn’t strictly about writing, but it’s something I incur often enough doing research that it’s been on my mind lately.
One of the most common connections I have noticed while waiting on hold (on the phone) is that the vast majority of music used by businesses is warpy. Most of the time it sounds as if they’re using a cassette tape they intentionally stretched and added static to. I haven’t done a scientific analysis of it, but it also seems that the bigger the company, the warpier the music.
How is this possible? In this age, technology must have advanced to the point that a clear digital signal can be sent over a phone line, right? The only answer I have been able to come up with is that the companies must be doing this on purpose. If they can irritate you enough that you give up, they won’t have to deal with you.
Any thoughts?
Michael
